In these times where remote work is the ‘new normal’, business managers are saddled with the additional responsibility of ensuring employees are effectively carrying out their responsibilities and meeting deadlines on assigned duties. This can sometimes be a daunting task as one can’t really tell what a subject is doing or where he is at a particular time because when you’re home, priorities would compete and distractions are inevitable! But how do you, as an employer, keep a tab on how an employee carries out his duties?

  1. Have an attendance tracking tool/system: This is very important in order to monitor the work hours of each employee in relation to the execution of their set goals. Your time and attendance system should be linked to your intranet where reports are drawn on work progress and status. This way assigned projects are accurately measured in juxtaposition with their expected timelines and their eventual execution timeframe.

  2. Communicate frequently: Team collaborations and real-time meetings are not only crucial but paramount in ensuring everyone is on the same page. At best, a reliable medium of communication should be adopted in order to avoid a cluster of systems and possible loss of vital details. Effective communication allows transparency which births accountability and in turn drives productivity. People get inspired to work when the idea is clearly conveyed- devoid of ambiguity.

Also, frequent meetings help to reemphasize roles and responsibilities as well as keeping everyone motivated and conscious of the work environment. While at it, words of affirmation and encouragement should be used to set the tone of conversations. Tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoho Cliq offer instant communication and collaboration functionality.

  • Provide necessary work tools: Internet, power system, work applications, technological devices, etc. that your employees need to function in their respective lines of duty should be provided. A lack in any of the items an employee requires would most likely record an underperformance which is a threat to the overall progress of the business.

  • Reward good performances: Since KPIs can be tracked and measured, at the end of every week or month, employees who have commendable reports should be appreciated. Identifying and appreciating exceptional talents would go a long way in boosting their morale as well as motivating others to strive to achieve excellence.

As an employer, more than ever, this is the most important time to ensure all your staff remain committed to the general goals, mission, and vision of your business. A premium should be placed on ensuring constant team collaborations so everyone can be connected and motivated. Simple work tools and apps designed for this purpose should be invested in. Asides these portraying professionalism, they are also instrumental to business success.
